When Angie and Markus Nickol decided to put their careers as a judicial clerk and business consultant on hold for three months and temporarily decamp from Nuremberg to Los Angeles, they probably didn't expect to return to Germany with new names and a Dharma-family. But such is the transformative power of the Hazy Moon! Here are images from the double-jukai ceremony for Shinnyo (aka Angie) and Kansho.

The last week of 2009 and the first hours of 2010 saw a whirlwind of activity at the Hazy Moon: our five-day Year-end Sesshin, a mini-retreat on Dec. 31 for beginning meditation students, our dramatic New Year's Eve observances, and a festive party in the wee hours of January 1.

In late October, about 10 members of the Hazy Moon joined an equal number from our Mexican sangha at the Black Scorpion Zen Center, the Hazy Moon's sister temple, for a week-long sesshin. Claudia Hosso Politi, sensei--resident priest at the Scorpion--made everyone feel welcome. The powerful retreat concluded with an observance of the Day of the Dead, followed by an outing to the historic cemetery in the center of nearby Tepoztlan.

The Hazy Moon's observance of Obon--when we remember lost loved ones by chanting their names from our Book of the Dead--and Sagaki (the feeding of Hungry Ghosts) is both a solemn and festive affair. This year we were happy to welcome three California Lutheran University students, including Thea Cornell, who took these beautiful pictures of the ceremony.

Derek Hogen Dieter and Megan Kogen Crowe--known affectionately as the Ogens--tied the knot at a spectacular beachfront hotel in Santa Monica this fall. Family from Southern California, Tennessee and Massachusetts were on hand for the ceremony, which was officiated by Hazy Moon priest Kelly Doman Stevens, sensei.
