Bathing the Body of the Buddha

by Nyogen Roshi

Reflecting on the Hanamatsuri ceremony–when Sangha members offer flowers and bathe the body of a statue representing the newborn Buddha–Nyogen Roshi reminds us that this ritual of purification is simply another reminder that cultivating samadhi is the point of our practice. And, he adds, this means that the body we bathe is our own. “There is no point on the compass that you don’t totally cover,” he says.
